Warren Buffett to Host Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder Meeting with Succession in Focus

Tomorrow (May 4), Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway will kick off its annual shareholder meeting in the investing conglomerate’s home base in Omaha, Neb. This year, Buffett will host the meeting without his right-hand man, Charlie Munger, who passed away late last year at the age of 99. Thousands of Berkshire shareholders will look for updates on Buffett’s succession plan as well as his next big bet, as the company is also set to report first-quarter earnings tomorrow morning. It will not be the first time Buffett leads the shareholder meeting by himself, though. He held Berkshire’s 2020 meeting—virtually due to Covid-19—without Munger and said, “It particularly doesn’t feel like an annual meeting because my partner of 60 years, Charlie Munger, is not sitting up here.” Munger’s passing in November put Berkshire’s energy business chief Greg Abel and insurance chief Ajit Jain in the spotlight. In 2021, Munger revealed at that year’s shareholder meeting that Abel would succeed Buffett as CEO if anything happened to the CEO. “The directors are in agreement that if something were to happen to me tonight, it would be Greg who’d take over tomorrow morning,” Buffett told CNBC subsequently.

Sony and Apollo propose $26bn Paramount offer, WSJ reports

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and private equity firm Apollo Global Management have made a $26 billion cash offer for movie group Paramount Global, the Wall Street Journal reported. The companies submitted a non-binding offer letter on Wednesday, signed by Sony Pictures Chief Executive Tony Vinciquerra and Apollo partner Aaron Sobel, the WSJ said, citing people familiar with the matter. Apollo did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters, which reported in April that Sony’s SPE and Apollo were in talks on a joint bid. Paramount and Sony declined to comment on the Wall Street journal report. SPE would hold a majority stake in the venture, a source previously told Reuters, and operate Paramount, whose movie library spans “Star Trek”, “Mission:Impossible” and “Indiana Jones”, alongside TV characters like SpongeBob SquarePants. Paramount is already in exclusive merger talks with Skydance Media and is working to build its streaming business as it faces tough competition from Netflix and Walt Disney as viewership of cable TV declines.

Sony Reportedly Submit $26B Offer for Paramount

Paramount (PARA) is a New York-based media, streaming, and entertainment company that boasts a worldwide presence. Reports had been circulating for some time now that the companys management had been on the hunt for a potential deal. On Thursday, May 2, 2024, it appeared that Sony Group (NYSE:SONY) may have tabled an offer that could move the needle. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Sony and Apollo offered to buy Paramount Global for US$26 Billion in an all-cash buyout. The report says that Sony and the private-equity giant Apollo submitted a letter with the non-binding offer on Thursday. The bid would include the assumption of debt and can be negotiated. Indeed, the offer looks to be a premium compared to the companys current US$22 Billion enterprise value. Shares of Paramount jumped 13% as of close on Thursday, May 2. The company has struggled to maintain momentum after the launch of its streaming service Paramount Plus back in March 2021. However, it did meet some success with film releases like Mean Girls and Bob Marley: One Love so far in 2024.
