Americans Pour Into Pawnshops, Selling Gold Jewelry As Price Surges

Americans Pour Into Pawnshops, Selling Gold Jewelry As Price Surges With gold trading at record highs, cash-strapped Americans are heading to pawnshops to sell their jewelry. “People are using gold as an ATM they never had,” King Gold & Pawn and Empire Gold Buyers owner Gene Furman tells Bloomberg . He says gold-selling traffic at his 5th Avenue location in New York City has more than tripled as gold has surged 17% off its 2024 low in February to now trade near $2,400 an ounce. While some just want to take advantage of the price surge, others are compelled by price inflation that''s put them in a financial bind. "Prices are high, and I need cash,” 30-year-old IT specialist Branden Sabino tells Bloomberg, citing the burden of higher prices for food, rent and car insurance. A 55-year-old woman said she needed the money to pay for gas. Most are selling jewelry, including many offloading inherited items with sentimental value that''s now apparently eclipsed by all-time highs in gold . House of Kahn Estate Jewelers'' Tobina Kahn says younger Americans'' fashion sensibilities are also a factor: "Young people are not wearing grandma’s jewels.

Forget the Bad CPI News, Buy the Dip in These 3 Runaway Earnings Winners

The start of a new earnings season is a good time to look back at the earnings season that recently ended. When you do, you can find some earnings winners that are likely to beat expectations in the coming quarter as well. But before you do, it’s worthwhile to look at the recent economic data. If anyone was starting to believe inflation was going to go quietly, the March reading of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) dispelled that notion. Remember, even at the Federal Reserve’s preferred target of 2% (which is arbitrary by the way), it means that prices are always increasing. However, the thinking is that at a 2% rate, wage increases can outpace inflation and the economy can hum along. That’s not what’s happening now. And millions of Americans notice it in the essentials they buy every week. Some corporations are feeling it on their bottom lines as well. However, as this past earnings season showed, many companies had solid earnings beats. And several of these earnings winners are in sectors that are likely to outperform in the coming quarter.

3 Must-Own Retail Stocks Primed for a Tax Refund Rally

Tax refunds from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) are up this year . The tax agency reports the average refund issued so far in 2024 is worth $3,182, up 5.1% from $3,028 last year. This is good news for tax filers who likely already have in mind what they will do with their refund. And it’s a safe bet that a lot of people will spend at least a portion of their tax refund at retail outlets. After all, spending by consumers accounts for nearly 70% of the American economy. The retail sector in the U.S. remains strong. In February of this year, retail sales rose 0.6%, helped by spending on big ticket items such as motor vehicles. In the past year, the S&P retail index has gained 16% . While that trails the 24% increase in the benchmark S&P 500 index over the same period, it shows gathering strength in the retail sector, which had struggled coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic. Here are three must-own retail stocks primed for a tax refund rally. If You Can Only Buy One Value Stock in April, It Better Be One of These 3 Names

Value stocks are securities that look fairly or undervalued compared to their earnings, outlook and underlying fundamentals. Value stocks also tend to be of established blue-chip companies that are profitable, stable and pay their shareholders regular dividends. These stocks are basically the opposite of high-flying growth stocks and start-up companies whose share prices rise at a fast rate even if the organization behind the stock is unprofitable, sending the stocks into overvalued territory. Since the current bull market began in fall 2022, growth stocks have outpaced value stocks by a big margin. The market rally has been fueled by mega-cap technology stocks , semiconductor concerns and hype surrounding artificial intelligence. However, signs are emerging that the rally is broadening out and value stocks are starting to catch up , driven higher by cost controls, strong earnings, dividend increases and other catalysts that appeal to long-term investors. Value stocks also tend to perform well in times of uncertainty and turbulence such as now.
